Hugo Damstra

Hugo is a fundamental cell biologist with a strong focus on advanced light microscopy. During his PhD at Utrecht University, he focused on the development and application of expansion microscopy, and was involved in developing Ten-fold Robust Expansion (TREx) microscopy (Damstra et al, eLife 2022). He applied this technique to visualize a variety of biological interests with a particular focus on the microtubule cytoskeleton in T cells. He also spearheaded the development of a method to intrinsically calibrate hydrogels termed GelMap (Damstra et al, Nature Methods 2023).

Hugo easily gets lost in new hobbies, although making music and photography seem to stick around.
